Our next door neighbour has just decimated some beautiful trees that were significant and hundreds of years old. Unfortunately in Vanuatu there are no laws prohibiting such vandalistic behaviour

King Wins VGO Title

Jason King has been a regular visitor to Vanuatu for many years but until now has been unable to put 4 rounds together to secure the title.
In 2009 he did just that to put a huge gap between himself and the rest of the 38 competing professionals in the field.
Defending Champion Brad McIntosh and Jason traded blows for the first two rounds and were locked together on 10 under par at the close of round two and most punters were betting that they would fight out the title even though at that stage Michael Wright, Peter Nolan, Krishna Singh, Corey Gerard and Martin Dive were all within striking distance.
King had suffered the worst of the wet conditions for days one and two whilst McIntosh had enjoed the best of the wet conditions so nit was fair to say that given a level playing field King was showing the form required to win the event.
On day 3, often referred to in golfing terms and “moving day” King did just that and shot 6 shots clear of McIntosh to finish the round at 16 under par with McIntosh trailing at 10 under.
The final day saw King McIntosh and Wright playing together and the enthusiastic crowd that followed this group would not be disappointed with the exhibition that these touring professdionals put on
In the front nine King shot an impressive 30 (-6) to move to 22 under and put the title beyond reach of McIntosh who fired a 34 (-2) to leave him 10 shots adrift of the leader.
In the Back nine McIntosh received news that his wife, Jess, had just delivered their first child at Wollongong Hospital, so it would be with very mixed emotions that Brad completed the back nine.
On 10 he hit a magnificent shot from the right trees to 15 feet but could not make the eagle putt
On 11 all three players made solid birdies with McIntosh almost holing his second shot.
At 12 King hit a magnificent tee shot to 3 feet but failed to convert,
The crowd swelled as is the custom as the players approach the final hole with the result well beyond doubt. Although King was forced to lay up on the 18th he recovered to get up and down for par to post 25 under. McIntosh held onto second ahead of Michael Wright )(-11) and Peter Nolan (-10)

Well it's only 7 weeks till the VGO kicks off again for 2009.
Our committee and the greens staff at the Port Vila Golf & Country Club www.pvgcc.vu have all been busily putting the nuts and bolts on what will be another great week of golf in paradise.
The full week's activity schedule is published on the VGO website www.vanuatugolfopen.info for players to view.
Last years defending champion mens (Brad McIntosh) and champion ladies (Stepanie Brennan) players are back to defend their titles. In addition promising Queensland junior Evan Sinclair has made an early stat to his title bid this year by getting in an early visit in June.
Local stars Tony Mansale and Joespho Matuatu are fine tuning tehir already impressive games and if Josepho continues the form I witnessed when I played with him last week he will give the professionals a nudge.

Go Queenslanders

What a night for the mighty maroons. Sitting in the newly renovated Anchor Inn in Port Vila looking out over the harbour and watching the maroons smack the hapless blues was pure joy to my heart.
A cold tusker or three made it a very pleasant evening out
